No matter if you are in New Zealand for a short visit, a somewhat longer stay or are a local resident who hasn’t yet had the opportunity to explore your own backyard, you simply have to see Queenstown and New Zealand South Island. Sometimes referred to as the ‘mainland’, the South Island with its more than 150,000km2 is the ultimate adventure playground for all nature lovers and outdoor-obsessed amongst us. It is for good reason that the biggest of New Zealand’s islands is world famous for its pure natural landscape – you will discover astonishing world heritage sites, beautiful fjords, white glaciers, rugged coastlines and native forest – a truly unique and majestic land.
Bookings in advance are required, especially during summer-time when Queenstown is bursting with activity!
The journey of a lifetime! In designing this tour, we wanted to create a schedule that was both flexible and also full of amazing group activities. We created gaps for your own spare time allowing you to personalise your South Island experience and not feel constrained by too stringent a tour. Whats more, it gives you the opportunity to easily extend your stay should you decide to do so. The trip starts with an amazing train ride across some of the most spectacular country side before meeting the bus in Greymouth on the West Coast.
Fly from Auckland to the Garden City Christchurch, for those who arrive early enough we recommend taking a walk around the city to see the rebuild and some funky art as this city rebuilds and develops. The container mall is well worth a look.
Accommodation: YMCA (dorm share)
The train service heads over the stunning Arthur's Pass to Greymouth where you have a half hour stop before you get picked up by the bus outside the train station. We stop in Hokitika, famous for pounamu (jade) and at the Bushman’s Centre to learn about the local history, before heading down to Lake Mahinapua for the night. Tonight it’s a group meal at a traditional West Coast Pub before a few fun games so we get to know each other.
Accommodation: Accommodation at Lake Mahinapua Hotel(dorm share)
Today you will do the ‘Glacier Valley Walk’ trip – you will get to see the glacier up close and personal, a guide will take you down the valley and explain the amazing environmental changes that have occurred here over the last few years. After exploring this awesome and unique area you can relax in the hot pools. (You can also upgrade to the Ice Explorer Trip with heli flight)

Includes: Glacier Valley Walk and Entry to Glacier Hot Pools
We recommend an extra day in Franz Josef to truly grasp the nature and beauty. More hiking, horse back riding, kayaking can be done. Or simply explore the country side.
